Kombucha Wonder Drink

Kombucha Wonder Drink
Cost: 2.00? 8.5oz
Active ingredients: Caffeine, Tea, Kombucha
Rating: -1 out of 10

This is the WORST tasting drink I have ever had the displeasure to write about. I could barely manage two sips. No one else could do more than one. It tastes like cow piss that had been molding over in the warm sun for over a month. It was server chilled and gross. Seriously if you see this drink i might stop shopping at what ever store carries it as the flavor is so bad it could infect the flavor of other drinks near by. Even the sent was horrible. If you want an honest account of the flavor it had a really bitter prune like flavor that remind me of the scent of vomit. Seriously NO don't drink this don't make this. I hate myself for drinking it. I am sorry to the company which at some point will read these and perhaps realize they are sending poison out to people. It is supposed to be some weird mystical unsweetened tea, but it was a mistake gone horribly wrong.

You made my day. Our daughter wants us to try this to make us healthier, more energetic and just all around feel good. I don't think so. I haven't had as good a laugh while reading this for quite some time. Will forward it to her and I am sure she will send her comments. Thanks for the giggle.

Hi Dan,

Your review comes straight out of your tastebuds’ and nose’s hearts. Kombucha Wonder Drink beverages leave nobody indifferent, that’s for sure. May I ask which flavor you tried? Have you tried the other two flavors? If you didn’t, we would be glad to send you samples so that you can give us your honest opinion. Some people dislike one flavor while they like another, and they usually feel strongly about it.

In any case, Kombucha Wonder Drink is always open to hearing comments (positive or negative – feedback can be entered on website). Also, its products are available in many places in Oregon, and if Flash21 is really interested in tasting it, I can let you know where to find them.

Funniest fucking shit I've read in a while! Keep up the good work, Danny boy!

After drinking the Kumbucha Wonder Drink, I found the taste quite pleasing. A bit tart and sharp, followed by a sweet bite of aftertaste. I encourage people to try it for themselves. Only 60 calories per 8.5 fl. oz.; completely organic. Helps me to get through my Personal Training clients in the afternoon energy slump.

Kombucha is the excrement of the kombucha mushroom as it metabolises sugar and tea in the process of multiplying itself. That's why it tastes like 5}{|7...because it is!

I'm not sure about a kombucha drink that is sold commercially, but home made kombucha is very pleasant to drink when the fermenting process is at hte right time. Beer and wine will taste horrible at different stages of the fermenting process, but I don't hear comments like the above about beer and wine.

Haha wow. I haven't drank this, but I know hippies are obsessed with kombucha. They try to make into like "pearl tea," but fail miserably at it. Honestly, if you want something fermented to drink buy some beer, scotch, or maybe Pu-Erh tea, if you know what that is. The people that market this prob attribute a plethora of medical benefits to an organism that has no clinical trials for backing. Well, I'll be laughing my ass off if I get to see this in stores.

Posted by: Skycapn at July 23, 2005 11:25 PM

You guys have your taste buds messed up by consuming too many refined foods. The comments you made can equally well apply to beer, and many wines, at least for those who are not used to the taste, and the same applies to kombucha. There have been many studies done in Russia about kombucha, and it does contain many complex compounds and vitamins. For that matter, sour buttermilk can also taste like baby's vomit, and fish sometimes smells like dog-doo. But you get used to the idea of eating these things. So you dont complain. Regarding why people don't drink beer instead, well, a beer like brew was made in many ancient cultures with bread and water mixed up and left to ferment. This ferment was rich in b- vitamins and amino acids, the by product of the fermentation process. As the beer progressed you got a greater percentage of alcogol, making it unfit for regular consumption. This is the modern beer we know today. Would it surprise you to know that all ancient cultures had some fermented drink or the other and these were fed to children too at an intermediate stage of fermentation when they were not yet alcoholic.

I am from an eastern culture, and the first time I smelt vinegar I had the same reaction you did for kombucha. However gradually I was able to get over my extreme dislike and adopt something that was beneficial to me. Extreme dislikes, like extreme obsessions get in the way of happiness. Forget about kombucha, apply it to anything and watch yourself ride the roller-coaster.

Posted by: soothingherbs at September 14, 2005 12:00 PM

your tea is pasturized, how can it really be any good. All the organisims are dead. Is'nt that the whole reason one would drink such a bevereage? And Its a mass produced product the quality is crap.

Posted by: flex at January 29, 2006 11:50 AM

I just have to say that i tried this and it tastes awful. It is overly sour and the idea of "flavors is crap. There is only one real Kombucha and that is from black tea and sugar. I have been drinking my own brew for years and love it. I do not know what they make this vile mix out of, but it is definately not the real stuff. If you want a true health drink order a Kombucha mushroom online for 20 bucks or better yet ebay for 10 and make your own because its the easiest thing to make.

Posted by: Anton at January 30, 2006 01:44 PM

if you like vinegar, than kombucha is a yummy drink. ive had and made some prety crappy versions , as well as tasty ones. enough sugar to feed the kombucha and stopping the fermentation about 7 or 8 days later makes a great drink. personally, a cup of my homemade kombucha gave me a lot of crazy energy...i felt a little strange too, like alcohol without loss of cordination.

Posted by: alicia at February 4, 2006 06:34 PM

why is there nicotinamide in this stuff? Is it the same as nicotine if it is it is very bad for your'e body and than i will nog drink it

Posted by: laurens at February 21, 2006 01:22 PM

Many people simply don't know the benefits of drinking fermented drinks, The Wonder Drink is very good, I especially like the green tea one and the oolong tea. Although it has the title of kombucha, this drink is pasturized and benefits of the bacteria have been negated. But, on its defense drinking an acidic fermented drink is good for you. Like to see this catch on for those non Kombucha drinkers. But nothing is better than homemade kombucha, fresh, better tasting, and living with good bacteria.

Posted by: Ed Perez at April 4, 2006 01:34 AM

Before seeing this article, I bought some kombucha at whole foods market. It was GT's organic raw kombucha, so I can't say anything about wonder drink brand, but the crap I tasted was revolting. I was going to try to get my money back because I thought it had gone sour or something until i read this review. Seriously, this stuff was FOUL!!! To be honest, the only thing that attracted my attention about it in the store was a very attractive woman happenned to pick up a bottle when I was deciding what I wanted to drink. I'm really experimental with odd types of food and generally don't think of any flavors as bad, some just don't appeal to me. This is bad stuff. BTW I saw a ginger flavor and a citrus flavor, I went for ginger(same one the woman picked).

Posted by: Kevin at April 4, 2006 02:48 PM

Kevin, I know the brand you are talking about, the brand is not pasturized, it is all natural. But, I guess the drawback is it has been brewed for 30 days and bottled even longer. So the taste will be more vinegary. When I run out of my homemade kombucha, I buy that brand, but I do not drink it out of the bottle, I get myself a wine glass and pour about 4 oz of it into it. Being poured into a glass softens the flavor of it. Despite, the taste the benefits is truly there.

The best tasting kombucha is the batch you brew yourself. I have started many on it here where I live, the taste can be compared to apple cidery, or wine. I usualy brew for 7 days, and start another batch, because that one won't last. We love our homemade kombucha tea. We call it the wine of teas, liquid gold. Living with good bacteria. Try to make some yourself. On the 7th day, after tasting it, it more taste a little vinegary, but once bottled, to turns to perfection, like aging wine.

It is all a matter of taste opinion. I don't think it tastes that bad. Different yes, but not bad. Plus, after reading all the reviews and gathering all the information about Kombucha, I'd rather drink it and wait for the benefits than not because it tastes a little weird. So it's not a sweetened soft drink...that's the point! Try some of the different GT's versions. The citrus and original aren't as bad as the ginger. A little costly yes, but a small price to pay to feel better.

Went on a bike ride with the family this weekend and mid ride came upon an adorable General store in Lumberville Pa (yes I know funny name). Anyway it was late in the afternoon and the kids needed to stretch their legs,4 year old twins in a bike trailer and my 8 yr old on his own bike. General store had all kids of stuff....even was home of the town post office. Kids had frozen fruit bars..hubby had an ice tea and I came upon the Wonder Drink...the Asian pear and ginger with oolong...I am the kind of person who is always looking for that new feel good beverage. I have to say it was different but I really enjoyed it. It was a good afternoon pick me up and was a real boost for the return trip which turned out to be against the wind. Kids were happy!!! Mom happy!! Would like to be able to buy it locally. May order a case.

Posted by: Jenn at April 24, 2006 08:25 PM

This stuff is amazing... I love it!! I am making my own as we speak... I buy it all the time... It is healthy and I find it tastey after I got used to it...

Posted by: xacrox at May 2, 2006 01:08 AM

I LOVE the stuff. The taste is a little different at first, but it really grows on a person... especially after you start feeling the benefits (more energy, healthier skin and hair, fewer colds).
Actually, when I took my first sip, I thought it was a funky sort of wine - it was good, but tart and I have definately bought really expensive wines that turned out to taste terrible (much worse than this drink).
I recommend GT's Organic Raw Kombucha in the Multi-Green flavor - and only 35 calories per 8 oz! Even putting the health benefits aside, to be able to enjoy an all natural beverage with only 35 calories is fantastic!

If you truely want the best Kombucha on the market you need to get "High Country Kombucha." This is by far the highist quality kombucha on the market. Try it for yourself. If you can sericiously tell me that any kombucha other than the tea you cultured at home is better you really don't know good kombucha. Dont get caught up in the marketing bull crap. Try High Country Kombucha. This is no comparison.

Posted by: shane at June 1, 2006 11:34 PM

I agree that High Country Kombucha is the best stuff out there. It is Authentic quality.

Posted by: Raj at June 23, 2006 12:03 AM

My uncle is the owner of High Country Kombucha. I will guaranty that this kombucha is the best kombucha on the market. Thsi stuff really works. I am in college and I get hangovers and kombucha in the morning takes care of them. This is a drink that you will love or you will hate. If you have not tried it, go buy some and try it. You wont be disapointed.

Posted by: Brandon at June 23, 2006 02:12 PM

I think that GT's is a great brand and the effervecent citrus is the best flavor, which is not overpowering and slightly tangy.

Posted by: john at June 24, 2006 10:50 PM

That's really funny. I actually like this stuff, but Kombucha really is a hit or miss, so I don't blame you. I'm sorry the experience was bad, but thanks for the laugh.

Posted by: Isom at July 27, 2006 12:57 PM

Hey - I first tried kombucha at a fungus store in San Francisco. I don't know the brand, but it tasted unique and made me feel good. Then I was doing a one day fast and saw the GT's at the health food store and bought it. I love it. Made me feel great and really helped with the fast as far as my energy levels. However, my husband and son thought it disgusting, like vinegar. Daughter liked it. So, like the comments above, you either love it or hate it. But no need to post such nasty comments... Have you ever actually tried "cow piss?"

Posted by: Char at August 17, 2006 02:31 PM

The first time I drank Kombucha I thought it had gone bad on the shelf. It was without question the worst tasting stuff I had ever experienced. Then I tried a different brand, in fact I tried different flavors of the Kombucha Wonder Drink and found 3 out of the 4 to be quite pleasant. Now, I am practically addicted to the odd stuff. My husband on the other hand, still thinks some Oriental guy pisses in it.

Posted by: Shirley Wells at September 22, 2006 05:55 AM

I thought the Kombucha Wonder Drink tasted exactly like vinegar. Oddly enough it was kind of addictive and quite a pick me up. I'm used to drinking apple cider vinegar (a couple tablespoons) a day anyway, now I'll just have the 8.5 oz wonder drink!

Posted by: valarie at October 15, 2006 12:43 PM

Some people do not understand what Kombucha is and dislike fermented drinks generally.

The Wonder drink brand website even explains that the product is not made from a mushroom, "Making kombucha requires a starter culture (very much like a sourdough starter or yogurt culture) to turn tea into this wonderful drink. Technically, it is a cellulose fiber mat (also called ‘scoby’ or ‘mother’)." Basically, it is produced from a bacterial culture and yeast that work together to produce a healthy bland of yogurt type cultures within a acdic drink.

This drink is good for the body, but the GT Raw Organic brand and other more pure bottles of the Tea will only give the important suppy of bacterial cultures. Also, because it is acdic and does with some brands have a slightly high detoxing effect, only one bottle or half a bottle should be used per a day.
This stuff tastes really good to me, and you can get a bland that has sea weed and alge added from GT, and it simply tastes like the tea. However, if you don't like the taste of fermented drinks, you will of course not like this.

Scientific case studies have stated that some people find the taste of certain alcoholic drinks to their disliking, and some people cannot stand them at all based on their generic taste preferences. Although this is not an alcoholic drink it is fermented nevertheless.
I cannot believe someone stated this stuff was worse than beer however... What is beer but watered down alcohol usually cheaply produced. If anything this stuff is closer to the taste of sake. that being said, alot of people hate sake (rice wine) as well.

I just picked up a bottle of GT's cosmic cranberry flavored kombucha. I thought it tasted so bad I felt like there was something wrong with it so I decided to look it up on the web. It smells and tastes like vinegar...I can barely stomach it. But after spending $3.29 on a drink, I am not quick to throw it away. I wouldn't recommend the stuff : (

Posted by: Amber at October 19, 2006 11:06 AM

I think your comment is extremely dismissive, i'm sorry your first experience was awful, but I wouldn't persuade people not to drink it. There are very few kombucha companys, and the drinks they produce ARE tasty. Specifically GTS,SYNERGY because they make it with fruit juices. IF you were drinking indipendant brewed than thats anothers story. Kombucha has extremely healthy benefits and I wouldn't discourage people to drink it, infact I encourage everyone I know.

wonder drink kombucha is tart and wonderful. grateful it is available in fridge at health food store. It seems to be the only one available at the store i go to. convenient no home brewing saves you 10 days of waiting. relatively cheap about 2.50 a bottle plus tax i like the oolong niagara grape and green tea one cheers

I discovered Kombucha about 2 weeks ago and have become addicted to the GT brand (it is raw and unpastuerized and tastes great - but I'm not in it for the taste). Kombucha is very good for you and offers a lot of health benefits (look it up - it's more than just some stupid "health drink"). When I first tried it, I couldn't believe the surge of energy it gave me (almost instantly)! This is the most incredible stuff I've ever tried in my life. It is really sad that some people reading your comments may never discover how this drink can help them. Your comments are irresponsible. The wonder drink is pasteurized, so the health benefits may no longer be there, but you should have done a little more research on kombucha before writing your ignorant review.

W E L L, I just bought GT's brand of Kombucha tea in grape and ginger (uh oh)at my health food store and was apprehensive and very interested at the same time to try it after all the many and varied comments here (cow piss, eh, am still laughing!)and found the grape absolutely delicious! Can't wait to try the ginger. To each his own!!!!!! P.S. I love myself for drinking it, full of wonderfully healthy ingredients.

My husband went to Whole Foods this afternoon to pick us up some dinner, and while he was there he picked up several drinks from the cold beverage cooler. He knows I always like to try new beverages and especially ones that are good for you. There are so many drinks out there that claim to be good for you or to give you energy but are not really healthy...anyway, he bought me the SYNERGY Organic & Raw Guava Goddess. This is 95% GT's Kombucha. It looked great, the packaging totally appealed to me, and it was pink! What more could I ask for in a drink?! I was very excited for my first sip, and I took a big one. WHOA!! Not what I expected! I looked at the label again to see if it contained grapefruit as it certainly didn't taste like guava! I gave it another "small" sip and took a whiff of it. It smelled very bad, like rotting guava. I said to my husband "thanks for thinking of me, but I think this has turned." I actually have it sitting right here next to me and I'm trying to cut it some slack, but I don't know, the scent is really horrible. Is it supposed to be "carbonated" - I realize that's probably from the fermentation but when I gently shook it(as recommended), it totally bubbled over and spilled all over me which thrilled me beyond belief to now have the scent of rotting guava all over my pants...anyway, I don't know about this, it might be *too healthy* for me. :-p

GT's Kombucha really grows on you and also really has obvious health benefits. I have been drinking it for many months and am addicted. I turned my mother, who has cancer, on to it. She is convinced that the 2 bottles she drinks each day, have given her enormous energy and good health. To be honest, I did not like Kombucha at first and felt almost drunk after drinking a bottle. Months later, I gave it another chance and each bottle I enjoyed more and more. If you have not tried it, give it a chance.

Is kombucha the same thing as "Rejuvelac" (live organic acidophilus)? I found 8 oz. and 32 oz. sizes of Rejuvelac at the Food Co-Op in Santa Monica but would like to find it in larger quantities (1 gal.) if possible. My friend in Chicago can get it from her Raw Food store on Halsted but they don't ship to CA. Can anyone help??
I agree that the taste, once the Rejuvelac has been opened and past the recommended shelf life of 4 days is nasty. If you drink it after freshly opened and refrigerated, it's really not bad at all. It's similar to aloe vera juice.

Posted by: Debbie at February 19, 2007 12:50 PM

It isn't a tea, its a fermented tonic that uses tea as a base. And it isnt an "energy" drink. No wonder you hated it, you went in with completely incorrect expectations.

Posted by: anon at February 23, 2007 07:29 AM

I am addicted to kombucha. I actually like the taste, and nothing else I can consume makes me feel as good as kombucha does...it always gives me a lift in mood and energy. I drink it nearly every day.

Posted by: Heather Young at March 3, 2007 05:31 PM

I tried the Kombucha Wonder Drink "A sparkling Himalayan tonic...Asian Pear and Ginger blended with oolong Tea @ RFD in Santa Monica CA...

Understand I love anything that been fermented...
That said...I took one sip of this and was instantaniously elated because I believe I have found my favorite beverage...

Also bear in mind I'm not some Vegan only eating Birkinstock always carrying a yoga mat tree hugger...

I eat my share of junk food and regular soda but as time wears on my tastes buds are altering to more healthy alternatives...

I've tried the Synergy Kombucha and this stuff blows synergy away

Posted by: September at June 10, 2007 11:48 AM

I'm drinking GT's organic and raw cranberry flavored drink right now. It was not refrigerated and has been in my desk drawer at work and I am wondering if it is ok to drink???

I don't think it tastes great (vinegary taste) but I'm very interested in the benefits of kombucha, have tried it before and remembered liking it AND getting an amazing energy kick from it. I think the wonder brand tastes better but understand it's pasteurized and therefore not really a kombucha culture...so what's the point? Might as well drink tea, otherwise you're buying a marketing scheme called "kombucha". The bottles are nice and it does taste better than GT's. But at the end of the day I think my tastebuds will adjust and I'd rather have the real thing. Have been too nervous to try my own at home. ...so does anyone know if it's ok to drink if left unrefrigerated?!

Posted by: wendy at August 20, 2007 12:51 PM

I really apppreciate the information. I have never tasted moldy cow piss, so I didn't know how to describe the taste.

Posted by: nowimdumber at November 27, 2007 08:15 AM

I have been culturing my own kombucha tea for a couple of months now. I used to drink Dave's but found out that it is really easy to make my own. (just search online for instructions; there is a lot of how-to)

If you make your own Kombucha, you can customize flavors and fine tune the amount of fizz and acidity in your brew. My favorite is kind of like a sharp, fizzy ginger ale.

I usually put my Kombucha tea through a secondary fermentation in grolsch bottles to produce a drier, fizzier drink, but could just as easily produce a mild sweet/sour beverage (with only a little fizz).

Posted by: Saleh at December 25, 2007 12:05 AM

I bought a kit to make my own Kumbucha tea less than a week after trying the commercial stuff. Calling it an energy drink is a little bit of an understatement. The taste is something to get used to. But the same with beer as others here have said. And if you think beer is so great, why don't you drink O'douls all day long instead of water or pop.

Posted by: Stephan Miller at March 11, 2008 08:55 AM

It's funny when you consider how many people didn't like their first taste of beer (or most alcohols - unless it was the cheap, sugary wines). Kombucha is the same way - it grows on you and you will then notice it's health and energy benefits. I generally prefer the GT's over the Wonders I've tried.

Posted by: laderoono at August 26, 2008 11:05 AM

Bought some Wonder Drink w/green tea on clearance for 30 cents a can and told the cashier that I bet it tastes ghastly thus why its on clearance. Yup. Truely tastes like something gone horribly bad. Glad to find the comments about it so that I don't return it thinking its a good tasting product gone spoiled. I'm going to keep using it but consider it a hold your nose medicine rather than a drink that should taste good. Not the first health product I've tried that tastes terrible. I like the ones that claim the product has a "nutty" taste only to find it tastes like old shoe leather marinated in motor oil. There will never be a time that I wake up one day and take a drink of it and suddenly it tastes good due to me having gotten used to it. It has the aftertaste of vinegar and the initial taste of something gone way past its expiration date. If it has health benefits then its worth the cat piss taste.
