The beverages come in cans that look more like the non-alcoholic high-caffeine drinks that are particularly popular on college campuses than they do beer. Energy drinks (the kind that do not contain alcohol) constitute a $3 billion annual industry in this country. Being highly caffeinated presents its own health problems. It is mildly addictive and can be a threat to the cardiovascular systems of some people. But, young people soon enough made it more complicated; they started using Red Bull and the like as mixers with alcohol. This includes rum, vodka ... even champagne...
