Over the past few days, we wondered aloud what was going to be the next niche to be explored by an energy drink. Ironically, Marquis Platinum vitality drink put our musings to rest (at least temporarily...we will continue to tirelessly be on the watch for the latest and greatest energy drinks!). We came to discover Marquis Platinum as attempting to address a few niches, in fact, with one energy drink.
We viewed the package of Marquis Platinum as attracting the lifestyle niche. The 12 oz. can provides a luxurious appeal by combining black and silver striping as a background with a royalty-inspired logo and additional text. We imagined this beverage in exclusive clubs and bars...it would fit right in next to high-end vodkas, rums, tequilas, etc.
The contents of the can appear to be targeting another niche, that of the health and wellness crowd. Marquis Platinum provides copious amounts of antioxidants and value-added ingredients such as green tea, EGCG, aloe leaf, COQ10, pine bark, and others. The taste of the drink is difficult to pinpoint...perhaps a very lightly carbonated, slightly sweet watermelon with an earthy aftertaste. This is not the best energy drink we've tasted...but with all of the healthy ingredients included, we took it into consideration.
We felt a slight boost in energy. On a scale of 1 to 10 we'd give it a 5...not too much...just enough to know we've recently drunk an energy drink. Thankfully we did not experience a sugar crash several hours later.

I'm not sure I'd want to drink a beverage that has things like aloe vera in it and other ingredients that are meant to be applied topically to one's skin. Anti-wrinkle agents? In my drink? I don't think so.

Posted by: Jared at February 11, 2008 09:40 PMYou might want to do some fact-finding on aloe vera and the other scientifically researched ingredients found in Marquis Platinum. We exclusively use the internal gel of the aloe plant, the rare and most expensive part. Also examine pine bark extract, green tea extracts (specifically EGCG) and also Co-Q10.
These premium quality extracts aren’t found in typical energy drinks because they are just too expensive. This is one reason we are called a vitality drink, not an energy drink. Marquis Platinum also contains less caffeine then energy drinks, and ours is sourced naturally from green tea and Brazilian guarana, so the feeling one gets is not a quick energy rush, more a true feeling of vitality.
Our cost is higher than anyone else in the category because our product is more costly to make. Marquis Platinum is not for everybody, only for those who expect, and can afford, the best. I'm not saying this to be elitist, just stating the facts. If this endeavor were simply about profit margins, I would have formulated exactly like the hundreds of energy drinks already on the market. These formulas are cheap and easy to reproduce and package. I wanted to do something different, what I’ve termed The Luxury Refreshment™. As an example, the first ingredient in Marquis Platinum is pure carbonated spring water. This is another subtle, yet distinctive and costly difference between Marquis Platinum and everything else in the category.
Finally, I would be concerned about the ingredients typically found in energy drinks, rather then the natural extracts and botanicals found in Marquis Platinum vitality drink. Ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, artificial colors, artificial flavors, extremely high levels of taurine, artificial preservatives and synthetic caffeine – none of these are in Marquis Platinum. Check the label of your favorite energy drink and research those ingredients. You will understand why I decided against using them in Marquis Platinum, even though my profit margins would have increased, and why you might not want them in your body either. Just because these brands are mass marketed using images of extreme sports and other activities doesn’t mean they are healthy. It is important to read between the lines of multi-million dollar marketing campaigns, and see what the truth really is.
I know that Marquis Platinum is not for everybody, and we might not ever sell the kinds of numbers that the big corporate energy drinks do. But that is neither my mission nor my concern. I set out to create the absolute best of the genre, make it truly healthy and natural, and hit the 1% demographic who will appreciate such a product.
All the best,
