Yesterday while walking our dog Dom and I came across a memorial at a tree for a girl named Tori Reiss. When we got home we looked her up online and found an article about her. She's a 19 year old girl home from college for summer. The article suggests there may have been alcohol involved in the accident. The driver is only a 17 year old boy. I know that this is a tragic story told much too often. Many of us hear these stories on the news so frequently that we've become desensitized.
When Dominic and I saw that memorial only a couple blocks from our house it hit me hard. Tori is not just another teen statistic, she is someone's daughter, sister, bestfriend, or girlfriend. There's something about the wound left by a young person's death that time just doesn't heal. My heart breaks for all of Tori's loved ones. I also really feel for the 17 year old boy who will never be the same. Not even a grown up yet and his life has drastically changed.
My deepest sympathies go out to both families. I'm sorry you too were forced to join this tragic club.
Most days i'm only mildly disgusted with the hypocrisy of our nation, our government, and its citizens. This week I'm very ill and saddened with a recent decision our government has made. Just this week liberty and justice have been threatened by something called "eminent domain." According to this fox news report eminent domain basically means local governments can steal private property from one party and give it to another party who will generate more tax revenue. For example a family farm may be seized to make room for a super walmart. Its something that has been going on for a long time but in the past the federal government was involved. Now they've given the power to the local governments. Its sort of like giving a child free reign in a candy store. Scary thought, isnt it?
What's more is that this has been going on right under our noses for a long time. One day you drive past what you thought was a field and the next day there's a Super-something in its place, but what you didnt realize is that it used to be Mr. Hardworker's land. Perhaps it wasnt even Mr.Hardworker's land but just a beautiful view now replaced by an eyesore of consumerism. Perhaps that is our destiny, and this is not a curable disease. No more amber waves of grain, or purple mountain majesty. For the sake of the dollar bill they will be replaced with these tax generating monstrosities. So the next time you pass a farm or have the opportunity to see land unobstructed by walmarts observe a moment of silence for this beauty on the brink of extinction.
Since Dominic isnt posting pictures of his birthday dog I will. So here she is the dog without a name.

Back in colorado and i'm drying out like a fish out of water. Mexico was awesome! I swam in the ocean! I laid out on a real live beach! I brushed up on some spanish, saw the town, visited mayan ruins, soaked up some sun, snorkled, sailed, spent an entire week in paradise with the love of my life, and got eaten alive by mosquitos. I cannot thank Dom's dad enough for bringing me on that trip. It was beyond generous of him and i have no way to ever pay him back.
Here are just a few pictures from our trip...
